AZN's new incineration plant in operation
Moerdijk, 20.10.2008 - On Monday 20 October NV Afvalverbranding Zuid-Nederland (AZN) burnt its first waste at its new plant in Moerdijk.
The existing plant with three incineration lines has been extended by a fourth line, which will process 275,000 tonnes of waste a year. This will bring AZN's total processing capacity to approximately 1 million tonnes on an annual basis. The entire plant produces, when converted, an amount of sustainable energy that is sufficient for the annual consumption of 250,000 households. Essent Milieu owns 80 per cent of AZN. The remaining 20 per cent of the shares are held by DELTA.
Building finished in record time
Building on the fourth incineration line began at Moerdijk in February 2007. The new plant was designed and built by a joint venture specially set up for this project, the Consortium BnvR 2006, formed by BAM Civil and the Swiss company Von Roll Inova. Work on the plant progressed rapidly and was completely finished in a period of just under 20 months. Essent Milieu and DELTA have been contracted to supply the fuel for the new line, domestic and business waste, for a number of years.
Achievements
Project director Jean Wilbers praises the building consortium for its great achievement. 'Not only were they able to complete the building work within the very tight planning schedule, but the work was also done particularly safely. In just under 900,000 hours worked, no serious accidents occurred.’
The extended plant in Middenweg in Moerdijk is not only one of the larger waste incineration plants in Europe, but is also one of the best as regards energy output. At over 30 per cent, the plant is well above the average of around 25 per cent usual in the sector. AZN supplies high-pressure steam to Essent's adjacent combined heat and power station. The combination not only generates electricity, but also supplies heat (in the form of steam) to nearby Shell Chemicals Moerdijk.
Progress
The burning of the first waste in the new combustion line is the start of a period of several months in which the equipment and components will be fine-tuned and, where necessary, adjusted. Such a period is normal for large-scale plants of this sort. The completed extension means that Essent Milieu's total incineration capacity will increase to well over 1.6 million tonnes of waste on an annual basis.
Background information on the plant and the parties involved
A few figures on the fourth incineration line:
- The extension stands on 430 piles, each 35 metres in length.
- The incineration grid processes well over 38,000 kilos of waste an hour.
- The temperature directly above the grid is 1,100 degrees centigrade.
- 1,100 tonnes of structural steel were utilised.
- 8,000 cubic metres of concrete were used.
- 2.7 kilometres of pipelines were installed.
- At the factory 10 kilometres of aerial cableway were erected and approximately 108 kilometres of cabling installed.
An average of 185 people were involved in the building every day.
Profile of Essent Milieu
Essent Milieu, one of the largest processors in The Netherlands, offers its customers (governments and companies) environmentally aware solutions to their waste. It separates materials which are suitable for reuse. Essent Milieu produces sustainable energy from incineration and fermenting. Vegetable, fruit and garden waste is converted into compost and biomass, an environmentally friendly fuel for generating energy. Essent Milieu extracts biogas from its tips for the production of green electricity, heating and green gas.
Essent Milieu employs 670 people, who in 2007 provided a turnover of over 378 million euros. The company processes almost 3 million tonnes of waste materials annually at its production sites in the North and South of the Netherlands. At the same time it produces enough sustainable energy annually to cover the needs of approximately 350,000 households. Essent Milieu is also a market leader in the production of Green Gas.
