Gemeentemuseum The Hague and Essent present: Markus Lüpertz exhibition “In the Divine Light”
From 25 June to 3 October 2011, the Gemeentemuseum in The Hague presents a comprehensive retrospective exhibition of the famous German painter, graphic artist and sculptor Markus Lüpertz. The exhibition is sponsored by Essent.
Born in Reichenberg, now Liberec in the Czech Republic, the painter and sculptor Markus Lüpertz is among a post-war generation of German artists who had breathed new life into Expressionism – together with Penck, Immendorf and Baselitz. One characteristic feature of his work is his amazing versatility and quest for balance between abstract and representational and between form and colour. As a painter, his favourite genre is the landscape, while in his sculptures the key focus is on the human figure.
Nine thematically arranged groups
In this exhibition at the Gemeentemuseum, which is a listed building in The Hague and one of the top three buildings in the Netherlands, the artist’s oeuvre is presented in nine thematically arranged groups, giving viewers some new ways of looking at the artist.
Thematically linked to the museum itself
The exhibition is thematically linked to the museum itself, which was built by H.P. Berlage in the 1930s. One outstanding feature of Berlage’s architecture is that it seeks to emphasise the special status of fine art.
