Electrical Greenwheels shared-use cars in 4 biggest cities of the Netherlands

Since the 14th of November 2011, 25 charging points have been available for Greenwheels electrical shared-use cars in the Netherlands.

The charging points are located in Amsterdam, Rotterdam, Utrecht and The Hague. Essent has not only supplied the charging points, but also ensures that cars are charged using green power, enabling them to drive around CO2-neutrally.

Greenwheels and Essent have formed a pilot, where sustainable mobility in practice is encouraged and this is supported by a ‘Field of Experiment Scheme’ (Proeftuinenregeling) subsidy from the Dutch Ministry of Infrastructure and Environment.

Sustainable mobility

Now that the 25 charging points and cars are in place, these can be used by the approximately 20,000 Greenwheels motorists who live in these four cities. A smart reservation system ensures that the car always has sufficient power for the journey. The municipality of Amsterdam has also decided that drivers of an electric Greenwheels car can park free of charge throughout the city. For journeys that cannot be driven electrically, in Amsterdam alone Greenwheels already has economical city cars available at more than 600 sites.

Shared-use cars are used more often and in a short amount of time have many more kilometres on the milometer. Even so, the average journey of the Greenwheels motorist is short. Ninety percent of the journeys can be driven on a single battery charge. In addition, 83% of the shared-use car users are positive or very positive about the electric car. That also means that the shared-use car concept is more suitable for the transition to electrical driving than car ownership.
